A new Katy ISD elementary opens in Sunterra in 2027

Katy ISD is building a new elementary school, currently named Elementary #49, on Pitts Road inside Sunterra, and it is scheduled to open in August 2027 for the 2027-28 school year. The campus is designed to relieve Youngblood Elementary, and the district's proposed boundary change would move parts of North Sunterra, Winward and Anniston to the new school. It does not change the current assignment for 137 Eliana Shores Dr, which today feeds to James & Mitzi Cross Elementary, Haskett Junior High and Freeman High School. Here is what is coming, which addresses could be affected, and how to confirm your assignment with Katy ISD before you buy.

A new elementary campus is being built right inside Sunterra

Katy ISD is constructing Elementary #49 at 6435 Pitts Road, in the Sunterra development on a site the district refers to as the Centerra location. It is a roughly 157,000-square-foot, two-story campus, and the district approved a construction contract of about $41 million in February 2026. Ground was broken in late 2025 on a project budgeted around $50 million, with opening scheduled for August 2027.

The location is convenient for Sunterra families: the school site sits along Pitts Road near the Sol Club amenity village, so families in the western part of the community will have a short trip to the new campus. Sunterra's own master-plan materials label the ground beside the Sol Club as a future Katy ISD elementary school site.

Why the district is building it: Youngblood Elementary is over capacity

Elementary #49 is designed primarily to relieve Youngblood Elementary, which the district projected would operate at roughly 126% of capacity in fall 2026 without relief. That is the same growth pressure that prompted Katy ISD to open James & Mitzi Cross Elementary inside Sunterra in August 2025, carving new boundaries from the Robertson and Faldyn zones.

Northwest Katy is one of the fastest-growing corners of the district, and new campuses keep pace with new homes. For buyers, a growing district with new schools is generally a positive signal, though it also means attendance boundaries can move between the year you buy and the year your child enrolls.

Which neighborhoods are in the proposed boundary change

The proposed attendance boundary modification, presented at the district's June 22, 2026 board meeting, would reassign parts of three Sunterra-area neighborhoods to the new campus: North Sunterra, Winward and Anniston. Katy ISD sent surveys to 571 parents in the affected areas, drew a revised boundary option in late July 2026 after community feedback, and presented the survey results to trustees on September 21, 2026.

As of late 2026 the final boundary map was still under board review, so neighborhood-by-neighborhood assignments are subject to the district's approved maps. The changes are expected to take effect in August 2027 for the 2027-28 school year.

What about 137 Eliana Shores Dr?

For the 2026-27 school year, 137 Eliana Shores Dr is zoned to James & Mitzi Cross Elementary, then Haskett Junior High and Freeman High School, per current MLS and HAR data. Because the home is assigned to Cross Elementary rather than Youngblood, it is not part of the proposed Elementary #49 boundary modification area.

That could change in a future cycle as the district balances enrollment across the northwest quadrant, including the new junior high planned for the area. The reliable rule in Katy is to check the exact address, not the neighborhood name, every time boundaries change.

Also coming: a new junior high for the area

Katy ISD also has Junior High #19 in the pipeline at 2220 Schlipf Road in the 77493 area. Construction is expected to begin in June 2026 with completion in 2028, part of the same northwest-quadrant buildout. When it opens, it could shift junior high assignments for parts of the area, including possibly around Sunterra.

Between Cross Elementary, Elementary #49 and the future junior high, Katy ISD is clearly investing in this part of Katy. The practical takeaway for buyers: the school picture here is strong and still improving, but it is not static.

How to confirm your school assignment before you buy

Katy ISD assigns students by address, so before you make an offer, use the district's Find My School address lookup at katyisd.org to see the current assignment for the exact property, then ask your agent to confirm it in writing. The district's proposed boundary modification pages show upcoming changes, including the Elementary #49 maps, so you can see whether a specific address sits in a pending modification area.

If you are comparing homes in Sunterra, Carol Jukes of Realty Pros of Texas can pull the current feeder pattern for any address and walk you through what the new campuses mean for your family. Call (832) 212-2772 or send a message through the contact page, and she can also set up a tour of 137 Eliana Shores Dr so you can see the community while the new schools are being built around it.
